ASSEMBLYMEMBER TOM TORLAKSON HOST
33RD ANNUAL HOLIDAY RUN AND WALK FOR HEALTH IN ANTIOCH

ANTIOCH—The 33rd Annual Holiday Run and Walk for Health at Contra Loma Regional Park in Antioch on Saturday, December 12, featured 351 runners and will help provide funds for community grants to be awarded to local schools and libraries at the event’s awards banquet at the Lone Tree Golf Course in Antioch on Tuesday, January 26, 2010.

The Holiday Run and Walk for Health is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of the Delta-Antioch and Assemblymember Tom Torlakson, a co-founder of the event. The event strives to promote and build a healthy community—starting with our youth. Other presenting sponsors this year included the East Bay Regional Parks District, Sutter Delta Foundation, IBEW Local 302, Allied Waste, and Pacific Gas & Electric.

The Holiday Run and Walk for Health features a 1-mile run/walk, a 3-mile run/walk, a 10-kilometer run, and “kiddie dashes” for children seven and under. Awards are made to overall winners and age-group winners in each race. The race-day activities also included a Health Fair featuring vendors providing health screening services, health information, and healthy food and drinks.

The top overall finishers in the 1-mile race (for children 12 and younger) were Alan Alltop of Walnut Creek, who finished first among the boys with a time of 6 minutes, 31 seconds, and Kristen Black of Antioch, who finished first among the girls with a time of 7:24. Black’s time was the seventh-fastest recorded by a child 12 and younger in the 1-mile event’s history, dating back to 1991.

Finishing first overall in the 3-mile race were Tony Palermini of Antioch in the men’s division with a time of 16:50, and Lisa Penzel of Oakland in the women’s division with a time of 21:08.

In the 10-kilometer race, Juan Gomez of Livermore finished first among men with a time of 36:13, while Carmen Regalado of Antioch finished first among with a time of 46:47.

“I am so pleased that 351 people and their family members braved the rainy weather to participate in this year’s Holiday Run and Walk on our Contra Loma Regional Park courses. My thanks go to all of the volunteers and sponsors who make this great kickoff to the holiday season possible,” said Assemblymember Tom Torlakson. “In addition to helping send a healthy message to our children and our community, the Holiday Run is a great way to support our local schools and libraries.”

“The Holiday Run and Walk is an exciting way for our club volunteers to serve the children in our community,” said Kiwanis Club of the Delta-Antioch President Tique Lee Caul. “This annual event is one of our club’s major community activities. I want to thank all of our runners, volunteers, and event sponsors for contributing to the Holiday Run and Walk’s continued success.”

The Holiday Run and Walk for Health’s grant awards for libraries and schools will be made at an Awards Breakfast on Tuesday, January 26, 2008, starting at 7 a.m. at the Lone Tree Golf Course and Events Center in Antioch. The awards breakfast allows the Kiwanis Club of the Delta-Antioch to publicly honor the schools and libraries who won awards and grants. More information about the awards breakfast is available at www.holidayrun.org or by calling Martha Parsons at (925) 890-2665.
